Convert pounds to tons
Enter a weight in pounds and read the answer in tons. Two thousand pounds is exactly one short ton, the everyday American one, and 0.907185 metric tons. The selector under the fields switches between all three. A 2000 lb load, for example, is 0.91 tonne. For example, 4,000 lb is 2 tn.
How many tons is 2,000 pounds?
Two thousand pounds is exactly one short ton, because the short ton was defined as that weight in the first place. In metric terms the same load comes to 0.907185 metric tons.[1]
Read as a British long ton it works out at 0.892857, since a long ton holds 2,240 pounds. One weight therefore gives three answers, and the Ton type selector under the fields decides which one you get.
Where the number came from settles the choice. American and Canadian paperwork means the short ton, British paperwork the long ton, and anything written in a metric country the metric ton.[2]
What is a pound, and what is a ton?
A pound is the customary unit of weight, written lb after the Latin word libra. Since the international agreement of 1959 it has had one value across the English-speaking world: exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.[1] It divides into sixteen ounces, which the pounds to ounces converter handles.
A ton stands at the other end of the same system. In American use it holds 2,000 pounds, in British use 2,240, and in metric countries 1,000 kilograms.[2] Between the pound and the ton sits the hundredweight, 100 pounds in American measure and 112 in the British one.
The kilogram is what ties the two systems together, and the pounds to kilograms converter shows that step on its own.
Writing the ton: t, tn and long ton
Each of the three tons carries its own mark, and reading it is the fastest way to tell which unit you are looking at. The metric ton is written t, lower case and without a period.
The short ton is written tn. Since 1 January 2014 that abbreviation has been required for the unit on commercial scales in the United States, and devices built between 2008 and 2013 may still carry a different one.[1] So when a scale reads tn, the number in front of it counts 2,000-pound tons.
The long ton is normally spelled out, because no standard assigns it a symbol. Shipping paperwork keeps its trade names instead: gross ton and shipper’s ton. The tons to pounds converter lists the full set of names, including the three that describe volume rather than weight.

How do you convert pounds to tons here?
Below is the order in which the fields, the selector and the buttons are meant to be used.
Enter a weight in pounds
Type the number of pounds in the top field. The field reads both a decimal point and a decimal comma, and it also accepts plain fractions. You can enter 2500.5, 2500,5 or 2500 1/2 and the answer comes out the same every time.Pick the type of ton
The Ton type selector sits under the fields and offers three options. Metric (t) returns tons of 1,000 kilograms. Short, US (tn) divides the pounds by 2,000. Long, UK (long tn) divides them by 2,240. The unit mark next to the result field tells you which option is active.Read the answer in tons
The lower field shows the weight in tons and updates as you type. Results carry six decimal places, because a single pound is only 0.000454 metric tons and a shorter result would round it away.Copy the answer or turn it around
The Copy result button puts the number on your clipboard. The Swap order button opens the tons to pounds converter, the page that runs the calculation the other way. The Clear all button empties both fields in one click.
