How many ounces are in 100 grams?

One hundred grams is 3.5274 ounces. To get there, divide the mass in grams by 28.349523125, because that is exactly what one avoirdupois ounce weighs [1]. The full formula reads: ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125.

Grams reach an American or British kitchen from three directions. Nutrition panels state serving sizes in grams, European recipes and imported products are labelled in grams, and hospitals record birth weight in grams even where parents talk in pounds and ounces.

Precious metals use a different ounce. The troy ounce weighs 31.1034768 grams [1], which is 9.7 percent more than the avoirdupois ounce. That gap is wide enough to matter, so the Ounce type switch under the fields moves the whole calculation from one ounce to the other.

The input field also takes common fractions, alongside decimals. Type 1/2 and the converter returns 0.0176 ounces. Type 3 1/4 and you get 0.1146 ounces.

Scales sold in the United States carry it as standard, because American packaging states net weight in ounces while anything imported is labelled in grams. One scale then reads both notations. What is a gram, and what is an ounce?

A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, the SI base unit of mass. The kilogram itself was redefined in 2019. It stopped being described by a platinum-iridium artefact, and its value now follows from the Planck constant, fixed at 6.626 070 15 × 10⁻³⁴ joule seconds [2]. A gram therefore rests on a physical constant that any calibration laboratory can reproduce.

The ounce sits outside the SI and belongs to United States customary units. Its name comes from the Latin uncia, which meant one twelfth of a Roman libra [3]. Today's avoirdupois ounce divides the pound into sixteen parts instead, which is why a pound holds exactly 16 ounces. That step is handled by the pounds to ounces converter.

The troy ounce kept the Roman division, so a troy pound holds 12 troy ounces. Two things follow at once. A single troy ounce weighs more than an avoirdupois ounce, because the same pound splits into fewer parts. The whole troy pound is nonetheless lighter: it weighs 373.24 grams, while the avoirdupois pound weighs 453.59 grams.

Why is gold weighed in troy ounces?

The whole precious metals market settles in troy ounces. A written rule stands behind it: the London Bullion Market Association requires a bar's weight to be stated in troy ounces, in multiples of 0.025 of an ounce [4]. Gold, silver and platinum quotes use the same unit, priced in dollars per troy ounce.

Small investment bars, on the other hand, are often sold by the gram, in 1 g, 5 g, 10 g, 50 g, 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg sizes. To line such a bar up against a market quote, divide its mass by 31.1034768. A 100-gram bar comes to 3.2151 troy ounces. A one-kilogram bar comes to 32.1507 troy ounces.

In the converter, pick the Troy (oz t) option in the Ounce type switch. The suffix beside the result changes from oz to oz t, so the unit behind the number stays visible.

How do you convert grams to ounces in the converter?

Below is the order in which the fields, the switch and the buttons are used.

  1. Type the value in grams

Enter the number of grams in the top field. The field reads a decimal point and a comma alike, and it also accepts common fractions. You can type 12.5, or 12,5, or 12 1/2, and the result comes out the same every time.
  2. Pick the ounce type

The Ounce type switch sits under the fields. The Avoirdupois (oz) option handles labels, recipes and postage rates, so groceries and parcels stay on the default setting. The Troy (oz t) option handles gold, silver and platinum. The suffix beside the result shows which one is active.
  3. Read and copy the result

The result appears in the lower field as you type. The Copy result button puts it on the clipboard, and Clear all empties both fields before the next conversion.
  4. Reverse the direction

The Swap order button opens the ounces to grams converter, with its full table of American can sizes and sports equipment weights.

Frequently asked questions about converting grams to ounces

How many ounces are in 100 grams?

One hundred grams is 3.5274 avoirdupois ounces. It takes a single division: 100 grams divided by 28.349523125 gives exactly that figure. For a precious metal, the same hundred grams comes to 3.2151 troy ounces, because the troy ounce is heavier.

Is 30 grams equal to 1 ounce?

Thirty grams is 1.0582 ounces. One avoirdupois ounce weighs 28.3495 grams, so the gap runs to 1.65 grams on every ounce, or 5.8 percent. Rounding to 30 grams turns up in plenty of recipes and works fine for a spoonful of spice, where the difference is a fraction of a gram. Postage priced by the ounce and measured supplement doses are another matter, because the same gap adds up with each further ounce and reaches 16.5 grams after ten.

How many ounces are in 250 grams?

Two hundred and fifty grams is 8.8185 ounces. For comparison, an American block of cream cheese is sold in an eight-ounce pack. That block weighs 226.8 grams, which is 23.2 grams less than a European 250-gram pack, so a recipe counted in blocks is worth converting to grams before you weigh anything out.

How many ounces are in 500 grams?

Five hundred grams is 17.637 ounces. For comparison, a pound holds 16 ounces and weighs 453.59 grams. A half-kilo pack is therefore 46.41 grams heavier than a pound pack.

What is the formula for converting grams to ounces?

Divide the grams by the mass of one ounce, which is 28.349523125. The full formula reads: ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125. For the troy ounce, put 31.1034768 in the same place. Going the other way, multiply the ounces by 28.349523125 and you are back in grams.

How many troy ounces are in 100 grams of gold?

One hundred grams of gold is 3.2151 troy ounces. The sum is a single division: 100 grams divided by 31.1034768. To have the converter return that value, set the Troy (oz t) option in the Ounce type switch first.

What is the difference between an avoirdupois ounce and a troy ounce?

They differ in mass and in purpose. The avoirdupois ounce weighs 28.349523125 grams and measures food, parcels and sports equipment. The troy ounce weighs 31.1034768 grams and serves gold, silver and platinum. The troy ounce is 9.7 percent heavier. One more thing separates them: a troy pound splits into 12 troy ounces, while an avoirdupois pound splits into 16 avoirdupois ounces.

How many grams are in one ounce?

One avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams, rounded to 28.35 grams in practice. The value follows straight from the pound definition adopted in 1959. Can you type a fraction into the converter?

Yes, the field reads common fractions. It takes 1/2 and 3/8 alike, along with mixed numbers such as 1 1/2. That helps with recipes, because they state weights in exactly that form.

How do you convert a birth weight from grams to pounds and ounces?

It takes two divisions. First divide the grams by 28.349523125 to get the weight in ounces. Then divide that number by 16, since a pound holds 16 ounces. The whole part is the pounds and the remainder is the ounces. For 3,400 grams the result is 119.931 ounces, which reads as 7 lb 8 oz once rounded. Ready figures for common birth weights sit in the table above.

Is the ounce on a drink label the same ounce?

Drinks are labelled in fluid ounces, written fl oz. That unit measures volume, and one US fluid ounce is 29.5735 millilitres. This converter handles the ounce of mass, meaning the weight of the product. Volume is handled by the millilitres to ounces converter.
