How does px to cm conversion work? Formula and example

The whole conversion comes down to one formula built on the fixed relationship between an inch and a centimeter: one inch equals exactly 2.54 cm. You simply multiply the number of pixels by 2.54 and divide the result by the chosen DPI resolution.

The complete formula looks like this: number of centimeters = number of pixels × 2.54 ÷ DPI. The converter performs this calculation instantly, so you do not have to count or reach for a calculator.

Example: you want to check how many centimeters 1,920 pixels make at the standard screen resolution of 96 DPI. How do you check the size of an existing file in centimeters?

  1. Photoshop

    Open Image › Image Size. Clear the Resample box, then change the Resolution field: the pixel count stays put while the size in centimeters recalculates in front of you. That shows how large the print comes out at 150, 300 and 600 DPI.
  2. Windows and macOS

    In file properties Windows gives dimensions in pixels only, under the Details tab. On macOS the same figures sit in Get Info or in Preview, in the Inspector panel. The size on paper follows from those pixels through the converter above.
  3. Camera files and EXIF data

    Cameras write a separate resolution tag into the EXIF data, usually holding the value 72. The EXIF standard describes it as the number of pixels per unit of length in print, so it records an intended print density.[6] Print size follows from the pixel count itself: a 24 Mpx sensor gives 6,000 × 4,000 px, which is 50.80 × 33.87 cm at 300 DPI. Photographic gear is described in inches and millimeters, so those go into pixels through the inches to px converter.
  4. Figma

    Figma works purely in pixels and holds a fixed 96 DPI.[1] To learn the physical size of a frame, divide its width by 96 and multiply by 2.54. A 1,181 px frame is 31.2 cm on screen, while the same file printed at 300 DPI covers 10 cm.
  5. Canva

    In the Resize panel switch the unit to centimeters and Canva shows the current size of the design without changing it. Choose PDF Print on download if the file is going to a print shop.
  6. Word, Excel, PowerPoint

    Click the inserted image and open the Size and Properties panel. Microsoft 365 gives dimensions in centimeters, so you see straight away how much room the graphic takes on an A4 sheet.

When do you need an existing file measured in centimeters?

  1. Evaluating camera files for print

    You know that your sensor produces files measuring 6,000 × 4,000 px. The converter shows that at 300 DPI this is exactly 50.80 × 33.87 cm – more than enough for an A2 poster. You can also check the lower bound, namely how many centimeters a smaller phone file or a web graphic will produce.
  2. Screenshot and on-screen graphic dimensions

    You take a Full HD 1,920 × 1,080 px screenshot and want to know how large it will be when printed in photo quality. The converter shows that at 300 DPI this is 16.26 × 9.14 cm – plenty for a presentation slide, but not enough to fill an A4 page.
  3. Checking graphics before sending to a print shop

    You received a file from a client with a width of 2,480 px and you do not know what format it matches. The converter immediately shows that at 300 DPI this is exactly 21 cm – the short side of an A4 sheet. Print shops state their requirements including bleed in millimeters, so that part converts in the px to mm converter.

Why does the same graphic take a different width on every screen?

A 1,000-pixel-wide image fits in your palm on a phone and covers a third of a 24-inch monitor. A pixel has a physical size that follows from how many dots the manufacturer packed into one inch of the panel. That density is called PPI (pixels per inch) and it decides the result.

Browsers hide the difference on purpose. The CSS standard describes a reference pixel through a screen with a density of 96 dots per inch and scales every dimension against it.[1] A 200 px button therefore covers a similar share of your field of view on every device, even though it is physically smaller on a phone than on a monitor.

The link between a CSS pixel and a physical dot on the panel is reported by the devicePixelRatio property. A value of 1 describes a classic 96 DPI screen, a value of 2 a Retina screen, and phones usually report more than 2.[2] Artwork aimed at a Retina screen therefore needs twice as many pixels to stay sharp, which is why it is exported with the @2x suffix.

For conversion this comes down to one decision. Checking print size – set the DPI your print shop asks for, usually 300. Checking how much room a graphic takes on a particular monitor – enter that monitor's density from the table below.

What pixel density do typical screens have?

The density in the PPI column is the number of pixels per inch of panel diagonal. The last column gives the width in centimeters that a 1,000-pixel graphic occupies on that screen when displayed at 1:1.
