What is converting feet to pixels for?

Feet turn into pixels with one sum: multiply the size in feet by twelve, then by DPI. At 96 DPI a foot is 1,152 pixels, at 150 DPI 1,800 pixels, and at the 300 DPI used in print 3,600 pixels. The figure of 96 pixels per inch is what the CSS specification assigns to a screen.[1]

The twelve in the middle comes from the foot splitting into twelve inches, and DPI (dots per inch) gives the pixels that land on one inch. The whole conversion runs through the inch.

This is the working unit of US large format. Trade-show organizers sell floor space in feet, sign shops quote banners in feet, and the design software asks for a pixel count. British and Irish print buyers order the same panels in meters, so a job crossing the Atlantic arrives in one unit and gets made in the other.

How to work out feet to pixels by hand

The formula holds two operations: pixels = feet × 12 × DPI. The first turns feet into inches, the second turns inches into pixels.

Take a booth back wall 10 feet wide at 150 DPI: 10 × 12 gives 120 inches, and 120 × 150 gives 18,000 pixels. The same wall at 100 DPI needs 12,000 pixels, because fewer dots land on each inch.

Hence the rule for reading the result: the pixel count rises in direct proportion to density. Doubling the DPI doubles the width of the file, and the pixel count of the whole graphic rises fourfold because both edges multiply.

Orders write the size in the compound form, for example 8′ 6″. The prime mark means feet and the double prime means inches. Six inches is half a foot, so the converter takes 8.5. The field accepts a comma or a point, so 8.5 and 8,5 both work.

How many pixels are in a size given in feet?

Values follow the formula px = feet × 12 × DPI and are given in whole pixels. Whole feet always give whole numbers, because an integer is multiplied by twelve and by the density.

How many pixels are in the standard US formats?

The sizes that come up most often in American orders. The columns give three densities used in large format: 72 DPI for graphics read from a distance, 100 DPI for a typical trade-show build, and 150 DPI for material people stand close to. Sizes read as width × height.

The 4 × 8 ft sheet is the most common format for rigid substrates sold in the United States, and the 8 × 8 ft step-and-repeat is the wall guests are photographed against. The height of 8 ft returns several times because that is what a standard booth back wall measures.

Why is a foot exactly 0.3048 meters?

The international agreement of July 1959 fixed the foot at exactly 0.3048 meters.[2] Because an inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters, twelve inches come to that figure evenly, and the run from feet to pixels carries no rounding along the way.

Until the end of 2022 the United States kept two feet in service. Alongside the international foot, surveyors used the US survey foot of 1200/3937 meters, longer by two parts per million. NIST puts the gap over one mile at about 0.01 ft, or 0.12 in.[3] On 31 December 2022 NIST and the National Geodetic Survey deprecated it, and since 2023 one foot remains.

A third figure sits in the record: the UK foot before 1959 measured 0.3047990 meters.[2] A hundred feet of print at two parts per million drift by 0.061 millimeters, and the table below shows all three feet landing on the same 3,600 pixels at 300 DPI.

How many pixels does each foot give?

The English language has carried three feet within living memory. The table sets the one in use today beside the survey foot retired at the end of 2022 and the British foot used before 1959, and the last column converts each at 300 DPI.

All three land on the same pixel count because the widest gap between them is 0.000063 in, which comes to two hundredths of a pixel at 300 DPI. The distinction mattered to surveyors measuring miles, and it leaves no trace in a print file.

When is converting feet to pixels useful?

  1. Trade-show booth build

    Organisers sell floor space in feet, and the back wall of a 10 × 10 booth stands 8 ft high. At 100 DPI the graphic runs 12,000 × 9,600 pixels.
  2. Step-and-repeat for sponsors

    The standard wall measures 8 × 8 ft and guests stand an arm away from it. At 150 DPI the file is 14,400 pixels on each edge.
  3. Order from a sign shop

    The spec says 4′ × 8′ at 150 DPI. Entering 4 and 8 at that density gives 7,200 × 14,400 pixels, the figure to set in your software.
  4. Wall graphic in an office fit-out

    The architect gives the wall as 20 feet wide. At 100 DPI that is 24,000 pixels, and at 72 DPI 17,280 pixels.
