Convert gigabytes to terabytes

Type a number of gigabytes and read the result in terabytes straight away. A terabyte is 1,024 gigabytes in the binary system, so the converter divides your value by 1,024. Use Swap order to convert terabytes to gigabytes instead.

Why convert gigabytes to terabytes?

The gigabyte and the terabyte are neighbouring units of data size: 1 TB is 1,024 GB. Drive, NAS and backup capacities are given in gigabytes or terabytes, so you convert GB to TB when you want to compare a 1,000 GB drive with an offer quoted in terabytes.

The relationship is fixed: 1 TB is 1,024 GB in the binary system, which operating systems and this converter use. To turn gigabytes into terabytes, divide their number by 1,024. The converter does this the moment you type a value.

Watch out for round values. A "1,000 GB" drive is not a full terabyte but about 0.98 TB, because a full terabyte has 1,024 GB. You reach exactly 1 TB from 1,024 GB. It is the same effect as with 1,000 versus 1,024 at lower levels.

This tool computes both standards: binary (1,024) by default, and the Unit standard button switches it to decimal (1,000). Windows and RAM count in binary, while drive makers, macOS and search engines count in decimal — which is why the same capacity is quoted two different ways.

How does the gigabytes to terabytes conversion work? Formula and example

The conversion rests on a fixed relationship: one terabyte is 1,024 gigabytes. To turn gigabytes into terabytes, divide their number by 1,024.

Full formula: terabytes = gigabytes ÷ 1,024. The other way: gigabytes = terabytes × 1,024.

Example: an array is 2,048 GB. Calculation: 2,048 ÷ 1,024 = 2 TB. Likewise 4,096 GB is 4 TB — whole terabytes come from multiples of 1,024.

Mind the round values. 1,000 GB is about 0.98 TB, not 1 TB — you reach exactly 1 TB from 1,024 GB. The multiplier 1,024 comes from the fact that computers count in binary, and two to the power of ten is exactly 1,024.

In Excel, type the formula =A1/1024 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in GB. The other way, terabytes to gigabytes, use =A1*1024.

The full data unit ladder: from smallest to largest

Every data size unit grows by the same multiplier: each one is 1,024 times larger than the previous. The table below shows the order from byte to petabyte, with a typical example of what each unit describes.

UnitRelationshipTypical example
Byte (B)base unitone character of text
Kilobyte (KB)1,024 Ba short email or icon
Megabyte (MB)1,024 KBa photo or an MP3 song
Gigabyte (GB)1,024 MBa movie or a RAM stick
Terabyte (TB)1,024 GBa hard drive
Petabyte (PB)1,024 TBa large data centre

Order from smallest to largest: byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte. Each step is a multiplication by 1,024.

When do people most often convert gigabytes to terabytes?

You convert gigabytes to terabytes mostly for large capacities.

  1. Drive and NAS capacity

Drives and NAS arrays are sometimes labelled in gigabytes while you think in terabytes. 2,048 GB is 2 TB, and a 1,000 GB drive is about 0.98 TB — converting shows the real capacity at once.
  2. Backups and archives

A backup plan or archive adds up to thousands of gigabytes. Turning it into terabytes sorts out the scale, for example 5,000 GB is about 4.88 TB.
  3. Cloud offers

Cloud services quote capacity sometimes in GB, sometimes in TB. Converting lets you compare offers in the same unit when one says 1,000 GB and another says 1 TB.
  4. Telling 1000 and 1024 apart

The converter shows plainly that 1,000 GB is not a full terabyte but 0.98 TB, and that you reach 1 TB only from 1,024 GB. This is the most common source of confusion with drive capacity.

Frequently asked questions about converting gigabytes to terabytes

How many GB are in 1 TB?

1 TB is 1,024 GB in the binary system, which this converter and operating systems use. In the decimal system (SI), used by drive makers among others, 1 TB is 1,000 GB.

Is 1000 GB 1 TB?

Not quite. In the binary system 1,000 GB is about 0.98 TB, because a full terabyte has 1,024 GB. You reach exactly 1 TB from 1,024 GB. Rounding to 1 TB applies only in the decimal system that drive makers use.

How many TB are 1024 and 2048 GB?

1,024 GB is exactly 1 TB, and 2,048 GB is 2 TB. Both come out whole because they are multiples of 1,024, the number of gigabytes in one terabyte.

How do you convert gigabytes to terabytes?

Divide the number of gigabytes by 1,024. For example, 4,096 GB ÷ 1,024 = 4 TB. The converter does this the moment you type a value, with no button to click.

How many TB are 500 and 2000 GB?

500 GB is about 0.49 TB, and 2,000 GB is about 1.95 TB. The values do not come out round because a full terabyte has 1,024 GB, not 1,000 GB.

How do you convert terabytes to gigabytes?

Multiply the number of terabytes by 1,024. For example, 2 TB × 1,024 = 2,048 GB. Click Swap order to have the converter work in this direction.

Is 1 TB 1,000 or 1,024 GB?

It depends on the system. Operating systems and this converter use the binary system, where 1 TB is 1,024 GB. Drive makers use the decimal system, where 1 TB is 1,000 GB. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows less capacity in the operating system.

How do you convert GB to TB in Excel?

Type the formula =A1/1024 in a cell, where A1 holds the value in gigabytes. The other way, terabytes to gigabytes, use =A1*1024. The same formula works in Google Sheets.

What is the order of the units from smallest to largest?

From smallest: byte (B), kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB), petabyte (PB). Each unit is 1,024 times larger than the previous one. A byte describes a single character, while a terabyte describes a drive capacity.
